In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is depicted as being weak and not able to be a ruthless murderer when she has womanly traits. She can’t be strong when she is a woman so apparently she has to give up her womanly traits to become a man, like a man with manly traits in order to be a strong person, a ruthless murderer. In her own words,
Come you spirits
That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here
And fill from the crown to the toe top-full
Of Direst cruelty! Make think my blood;
Stop up th’ access and passage to remorse,
That no compunctions visitings of nature
Shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between
Th’ effect and it! Come to my woman’s breast
And take my milk for gall, you murdering minsters,
Wherever in your sightless substances
You wait on nature’s mischief! (Macbeth 1.5.36-46)
This idea that women can’t be strong and ruthless at the same time as being a woman while still having womanly traits is total news to me. I never realized that this was true cause I thought I was still a woman with womanly traits every time I felt the need to be strong and ruthless. I didn’t realize that every time I was strong and ruthless I sudden stopped being a woman with womanly traits and left all that behind by suddenly becoming a man with manly traits in order to be strong and ruthless. The fact that women can’t be strong and ruthless unless they become like a man is totally news to me.
The idea of woman being only able to weak and having to leave behind her womanliness in order to become strong and ruthless in my opinion is wrong and sexist. I think that a woman can be completely a woman and yet strong and ruthless at the same time all at once. A women doesn’t need to shed and leave behind her womanly traits and become a man like person on order to be strong and ruthless. A woman can be strong and ruthless in her own way with her own traits without the help of be coming a man or someone with manly traits. Women can be strong and ruthless in the way only women can they don’t have to strong and ruthless in the way a man is strong and ruthless. Each and every person is strong and ruthless in their own way, in a way that is theirs and theirs only, in an individual way, therefore women’s ways of being strong and ruthless may be different and show differently than a man’s ways of being strong and ruthless. This means that just because a women’s way of being strong and ruthless looks different does not mean that women are weak it just means that they are being an individual who is just as capable of being strong and ruthless as a man just in a different way.
Lady Macbeth being depicted as weak and unable to be strong and ruthless in her helping Macbeth murdering the king and several others, unless she drops her womanliness and leaves it behind to become like a man is wrong and sexist. She just was written so that she could not have the credit for her own capabilities because apparently women have to men in order to be strong and ruthless. I believe this is wrong and should not be thought of as right. Women are just as capable of being of strong and ruthless while still being women as men are capable of being strong and ruthless while still being men. Women being strong and ruthless just looks different then men being strong and ruthless it doesn’t mean they are weak in their womanliness.
