I think I’m gonna go back to the Dark Ages

In light of the recent election results, I find myself wondering what it would be like to move to a different country. OR what if we lived in a world where time travel was a thing? We could go back to time periods where life was vastly different than it is now. Times where different things were important, where societal standards were greatly different, both better and worse. After my not so extensive research and evaluating my general opinion, I will rate each time period I list below.

Let’s begin.

Traveling back thousands of years ago to the Stone Age would be pretty great. Times were simple. It was basically eat or be eaten. I know which one I would prefer. Caves aren’t too bad. I would rather not stick around during the Ice Age though, that is a time that just does not seem nice for anyone. 3/10 would recommend after my research. I probably would last 4 hours before something ate me. I’m not the most observant. Moving on.

Skipping ahead a couple million years we have arrived in the 1400’s, or the Middle Ages. After looking into it, I wouldn’t recommend it. About a 4/10. Society is advancing yes, but if you find yourself at the bottom of the feudal system that is in place, life is just plain shitty. But if you were rich, you also had a lot of expectations as you grew up, and having very little say over what you did or even who you loved. Arranged marriages ftw.

Moving right along we find ourselves in good ol’ homesteading America, 1800s edition. This century was quite the time to be alive, where so much progress was made over one hundred years. In between all that progress though, people lived some pretty average lives. Death rates were high among children, super depressing, and the average life expectancy was 35. Diseases like typhoid fever, small pox, diphtheria, among many others, were many things that could level an individual’s life expectancy. If you made it past all that and didn’t manage to work yourself to death, you could life until 60 or even 70. Best of luck. 5/10.

Zipping ahead to the 1950’s America for brevity’s sake, we find the world has changed quite a bit. Technology is amazing, television has revolutionized the world. America is better than ever, World War II has ended and the country can breathe again. Business was booming. Only if you’re part of the dominant culture that is. For everyone else that wasn’t white, male, educated, upper class, what have you, life was more than a little difficult. 6/10.

Each time period has had it’s issues, some more than others, but it shows that we can still come back from things that try to tear us down. No time period was perfect. Life can never be easy. These next few years will be rocky, but we have each other, and I know damn well we aren’t going down without a fight. We have come so far as a society, this backlash to our activism will not ruin all the progress we have made for those who do not have a voice.
