Macklemore has been known for using his platform for to speak about social issues ( Same Love, Wings, White Privilege II).
This time, Macklemore takes aim at the pharmacy corporations and shares his past experiences with addiction and dependency. His struggle with addiction has been clearly documented throughout much of his music. However, what makes this song different than his previous songs concerning addiction and dependency is that he shows there is a connection with it that goes beyond just his own personal struggles. This time, he tells the story of his younger brother Kevin, whom the song is named after. Leon Bridges adds a soulful feel to the chorus and as he sings the powerful line “Doctor please, give me a dose of the American dream,” which dives into our need to achieve happiness through whatever means necessary.
The song is definitely worth a listen!
